Biography

Laura Wall

My name is Laura Wall, and I am an artist and illustrator living beside the sea in Devon with my husband, Dave and rather mischievous dog, Roxy. If I’m not painting or writing stories about Geese then you can normally find me bimbling along the beach and rock pools of Teignmouth, or perusing the picture book section in book shops.

fisherman-peteI have been a professional artist now for nearly seven years and I’m mostly known down here in the Southwest for my murals and art series ‘Love at the Seaside‘ The seaside themes originated around the coast of Devon and Cornwall and is a story about a romantic couple and their dogs. However this series has now travelled to other parts of Britain and has taken the ferry to France! The style is quirky and people look out for characters that have sneaked into the paintings. If you look closely you will see Goose – my children’s book character in some of them!

Things really changed for me when I won Best Up and Coming Artist 2013 awarded by the Fine Art Trade Guild. It was quite and honour to win such a prestigious and national award as it is voted for by galleries and the trade. It was lovely to have recognition for my work. Since then I have had sell out solo exhibitions with galleries in Wales and Devon and you can now find my work in galleries all around the UK. To add to this excitement I have opened up my very own art gallery in Teignmouth, Devon. This year I had a solo show here at my own gallery, there were 20 originals in total and they all sold within the two hour preview.

dogAs well as stocking Love at the Seaside in my gallery and studio I also stock my book series, Goose. Goose is a character who was born about ten years ago and whose main purpose was to get me a good grade in my final year at university. Required to write and illustrate a children’s book for my dissertation, I was some what worried as to how to approach this. As a very detailed illustrator I got over zealous and complicated with my ideas and only when I saw my mentor declared that I really didn’t know how to approach such a task. It was his words that stay with me now and that was simply to ‘draw the first thing that comes into your head, don’t over think it and see what happens’. The first thing that came into my head was a Goose. A rather silly one with a big nose. I’m not sure what I saw or ate that day, but I never dreamed that Goose would become a 7 part picture book series, 4 board books and with merchandise too.

Since Goose was first published by Award Publications, he has reached over 40 countries and 11 languages, and has launched as a hardback book in America with publisher Harper Collins – that has been wonderful to see. However one of my favourite things was meeting Bill Oddie who has narrated all the books for an audio book series, which will come out imminently. Bill is such a lovely person and I can’t wait for you to hear his ‘Honk’! I couldn’t think of anyone more perfect to narrate them. Goose is available as other merchandise too including most recently, wall stickers (I have to admit I do have one or two in the house…) there are a few things in the pipeline too which I can’t wait to share soon!

Earlier last year Goose was signed to brand management company Fluid World, they are the company behind Hello Kitty and Mr Men, and Goose is their pre-school property they hope to see licensed into merchandise over the coming couple of years. Goose is also signed to animation company King Rollo Films. They have created a pilot of Goose with the aim of garnering a fully animated television series. I had the joy of meeting Dawn French last year who narrated the animated pilot of Goose for us – we are keeping everything crossed for a broadcaster to commission a series! You can see the animated pilot on my Gooseandfriends.com website on the home page.

Because of all these lovely things happening, and my persistence in pursuing these deals, I won the National award for Entrepreneur of the Year – awarded by the Venus Women Awards. It was quite an accolade!

bluebirdsSo what does the future hold now? Well I can say that I am currently working on two new series’ – brand new characters and stories that will be published in the coming year or so, as well as working on a new Goose story too (it wouldn’t be right not to!). I am always painting new Love At the Seaside paintings and coming up with stories, I hope that if you are ever in Devon you can come and visit my gallery and studio where you can see the full range and watch me paint. It would be lovely to meet you! You can find me at Laura Wall Art and Illustration, George Street, Teignmouth, Devon, TQ8 4AH. If you are interested in originals please contact me and I will put you on my mailing list.
